This week’s On the Radio segment covers water quality research being done at the University of Iowa. Listen to the audio below, or continue reading for the transcript.
A University of Iowa faculty member is studying how different contaminants get into and persist in surface water.
This is the Iowa Environmental Focus.
David Cwiertny, from the UI Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering examines how pollutants in water break down in sunlight or stick to organic matter.
Cwiertny’s research team is trying to develop new and innovative approaches for water treatment systems. The team is focusing on water reuse, and finding technology to be able to turn impaired water supplies into clean water that can be used again.
Overall the research team is trying to better understand and find a balance between sustainable agriculture practices that can reduce water pollution, while benefiting farmers.
